SPOT DEBUTS SATELLITE MESSAGING DEVICE

Spot is introducing its SPOT Satellite Messenger, designed to send a user’s exact GPS coordinates and selected messages over commercial satellites to tell others of their location and status. The device works around the world, independently of cellular networks, according to the company.

SPOT features four key functions: Alert 911, to dispatch emergency responders; Ask for Help, to request help in your exact location from friends and family; Check In, to let contacts know where you are and that you’re okay; and Track Progress, to send and save your location and allow contacts to track your progress using Google Maps.

The Spot Satellite Messenger weighs 7.37 ounces, includes two AA lithium batteries, and carries a unit cost of $149. There is a service fee of $99 annually or a $9.99 monthly subscription charge. It will be available beginning in November.
