Good things come in small packages for the folks at Haier America and Fisher & Paykel (F&P).
That includes, for the former, a new eco-friendly 1.7-cubic-foot compact refrigerator that features an advanced electronics and cellular technology cooling system called NuCool.
According to Haier, the new system achieves temperatures as low as 37 degrees, based on an ambient room temperature of 70 degrees, which was not attainable with prior refrigerant-free models. "Haier strives to be a pioneer in the implementation of new technologies in our product lines," said Matthew Sekelick, the company's compact appliances VP. "As a leader in compact refrigeration, we have looked to introduce environmentally friendly improvements such as NuCool that our customers desire."
The NuCool compact refrigerator, model C-RNU1708, which shipped late last year, features an auto defrost and adjustable thermostat, a reversible door design, and full- and half-width door shelves with 2-liter bottle storage. It is available in black and white and retails for $80 at Wal-Mart.
The compact fridge is the first application of NuCool technology, Haier said. Larger-capacity models featuring the technology are expected to be introduced early this year.
Separately, New Zealand's Fisher & Paykel has extended its 12-year-old DishDrawer dishwasher-in-a-drawer franchise with the launch of the Tall DishDrawer, which adds sleek new styling and a more spacious and flexible interior design.
The latest DishDrawer model was designed specifically for the North American market, the company said, which began production at its new Reynosa, Mexico facility last month. F&P expects to begin shipping the Tall DishDrawer in February.
"The DishDrawer revolutionized the industry with its economical yet efficient design and performance, but we have always continued to improve upon it," said sales and marketing VP Laurence Mawhinney. "Now with the Tall DishDrawer we offer everything consumers love about this product — energy and space savings — but with a more spacious and flexible interior design."
The Tall DishDrawer offers a number of key improvements over the current design including:
a top drawer that is significantly larger to accommodate 13-inch plates;
a completely redesigned racking system with vertically adjustable and independent cup racks and enhanced plate racks featuring folding tines;
a complete cosmetic upgrade with a new streamlined appearance; and
a more simplified and improved installation process.
"The larger top drawer and fully customizable racking system can be adapted to fit any individual's or family's lifestyle," Mawhinney said.
In fitting with F&P's "green" heritage, the Tall DishDrawer is also energy efficient and Energy Star approved. The new model also makes allowances for smaller loads by using as little as 1.98 gallons of water (vs. 2.6 gallons for a typical cycle). This single-unit or half-load function uses half the energy, water and detergent of a conventional dishwasher, the company said.
