Seagate will launch an entirely new way for consumers and businesses to interact with their digital content with the introduction of the company's FreeAgent data movers.
The data movers fall between a traditional external hard drive and a network attached storage device, the company said.
The FreeAgent Pro data movers will come in 320GB, 500GB and 750GB capacities with prices ranging from $229 to $449 when the units ship in February. The drives come with Seagate software for automatically syncing data from the drive to an external device like an iPod or USB flash drive. The units include an interchangeable interface system to the user can choose whether to use a USB 2.0, eSATA or FireWire 400 to connect to the PC.
Customers buying a FreeAgent Pro receive free six months of online storage space called Seagate Internet Drive. The web account provides 500MB of password protected space where friends and relatives can access photos or a way point to transfer large data files.
In the portable storage category Seagate in February will ship the four-unit FreeAgent Go line. These USB 2.0 based units will come in 80GB, 120GB, and 160GB. A diminutive addition to the line is the 12GB FreeAgent Go Small.
The higher capacity units have suggested retail prices between $129 and $179, while the Go Small will cost $149. Besides being portable these drives differ from the Pro line by being able to emulate a consumer's home PC.
This is done by synchronizing the home PC's data and programs with the portable drive, then whatever PC it is attached to will have the same look as the home computer, the company said. The drives are password protected.
Seagate's final new product offering are a line of affordably priced external hard drives that will sell under the FreeAgent desktop mover name. These will be available in capacities of 250GB, 320GB and 500GB with prices ranging between $129 to $259.
