ARLINGTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The following statement can be attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, recognizing Ralph H. Baer, inventor of the home video game system and 2011 CE Hall of Fame honoree, who passed away Dec. 6, 2014, at the age of 92:
“Few people can claim to have invented a multi-billion dollar industry, but that is exactly what Ralph Baer did in 1966 when he created the first home video game system. Weaving together his U.S. Army experience with his television engineering degree from the American Television Institute of Technology in Chicago, Baer came up with the ingenious idea to use ordinary home TV sets for interactive gameplay. Baer is an exemplary image of innovation, holding more than 150 U.S. and foreign patents. His service to and passion for the consumer electronics industry will be missed.”
Baer was inducted into the CE Hall of Fame in 2011. Learn more about Baer and his accomplishments here.
