Wayne, N.J. — Toys “R” Us, through its Children’s Fund charity, has donated $1 million to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.
The New Jersey relief effort was created by Gov. Chris Christie and First Lady Mary Pat Christie to aid, comfort and rebuild the Garden State in the wake of the storm, which impacted thousands of children and families.
Toys “R” Us, headquartered here, has been based in New Jersey for 38 years.
“We are so grateful to Toys “R” Us for its ongoing commitment to New Jersey and for this generous donation that will help families in so many communities devastated by the storm,” Mrs. Christie said.
Toys “R” Us chairman/CEO Jerry Storch said, “We take very seriously our responsibility to be a caring neighbor in the communities we serve, and hope this donation to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund will help provide assistance and comfort to the many children and families who were impacted by this disaster.”
The Toys “R” Us Children’s Fund also donated $500,000 to Save the Children to assist children and families in area evacuation shelters, and helped the organization collect and distribute diapers, baby wipes and hygiene kits in the aftermath of the storm.
Toys “R” Us also donated $25,000 in toys to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation during the holiday season, and gave $10,000 to Newark Now’s annual Brighter Holidays event, which included assistance to families that were impacted by Sandy.
In addition, the toy chain supported a charity initiative led by Nynell Langford, wife of Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford, to provide toys for children impacted by the storm, and donated $5,000 in gift cards through New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Hurricane Sandy Relief effort to help provide toys for families in hard-hit areas of the state.
The company is helping its own Sandy-impacted employees impacted through its Geoffrey Fund, a company program that offers financial assistance in times of hardship.
The Toys “R” Us Children’s Fund is a 21-year-old public charity affiliated with Toys “R” Us. The fund has contributed millions of dollars to organizations that support its core mission of keeping children safe and helping them in times of need, including those that provide disaster relief to victims of large-scale crises, as well as organizations that support children with special needs.
