Target Teams With Napster

Target has teamed up with Napster, Imation and Case Logic to create a “one-stop” music download shop at each of its discount stores and on its Web site beginning Feb.15.

The shops will feature pre-paid Napster download cards, a Napster 2.0 and Roxio software pack, blank Napster-branded media from Imation with promotional codes redeemable for free music downloads, and Napster-branded CD cases from Case Logic.

The download card, touted as the first pre-paid card for music downloads, will retail for $14.85, and will allow consumers to buy 15 songs from Napster.com without a credit card.

Target VP/merchandising Steve Eastman said the partnership “provides a quick and easy way to access high-quality digital music from a legitimate source at a good value.”

Napster, one of the first and most well known of the peer-to-peer file-sharing platforms, is now a division of Roxio, boasting content agreements with the five major record labels and more than 500,000 downloadable — and legally sanctioned — soundtracks.
