San Diego – Sony will pretty much complete the dismantling of its direct-sales operations at month’s end, when it plans to pull the plug on its e-commerce site.
The online Sony Store, located at store.sony.com, will take its last orders at 1 p.m. PST on Aug. 28, after which it will go the way of the manufacturer’s brick-and-mortar showrooms.
Sony shut nine of its 10 remaining company stores this year, leaving only its flagship New York showroom, located at the base of the Sony Tower in Midtown Manhattan. That too may soon be a thing of the past, as the real estate developer who purchased the building for $1.1 billion in 2013 is reportedly looking to open an ultra-luxury hotel in the space.
Sony said it plans to replace its online store with an information-only website that showcases products and hands off interested shoppers to authorized retailers.
The move is in line with the vendor's renewed emphasis on its dealer base and ends another chapter in its storied Sony Style chain, which peaked in 2008 with 59 stores and almost $1 billion in revenue.
