Shopify Adds New Tap & Chip Reader System

Works with contactless phones and cards

Shopify, the commerce-solutions provider for physical and online sellers, is launching a new payment device for retailers — the Shopify Tap & Chip Reader — and two new point-of-sale (POS) accessories.

Priced at $49, the Tap & Chip Reader lets consumers make a payment by tapping their phone or inserting a debit or credit card. It supports Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and is EMV and PCI certified.

It also connects to Shopify’s POS system for such additional functionality as inventory management.

Shopify’s Tap & Chip Reader Dock enables retailers to use the payment system in a fixed position while charging, or undocked for walking around a store.

The new Shopify Retail Stand, meanwhile, is for use with tablets. It tilts the tablet for easier consumer access, and it includes two USB ports to charge other devices.

The dock is $39 and the stand is $149.
