Mega Group USA, the national buying organization for independent mattress, appliance, CE and furniture dealers, is admittedly frugal when it comes to costs.
But the group’s rapid rise in membership in 2016, to some 1,700 dealers, has prompted the addition of four new staffers and its first move in nearly 20 years to larger headquarters facilities.
Joining the team are Darin Lehr, as sales VP; Karen Young, as meetings and events director; and John Schmelzer, named regional manager for Arizona and Southern California.
The fourth recent hire is marketing director Amanda Evans, who came aboard in August.
Lehr, a 20-year veteran of Serta-Simmons, will lead Mega’s 15 regional managers, including Schmelzer, who also served at Serta. The regional managers act as dealer consultants to support and develop current members and attract new ones, Mega said.
Young had informally served as an event planner for the group since 2003 and formally joined the staff this quarter. In her new role she will oversee Mega’s two annual buying shows; its showrooms in High Point, N.C., Tupelo, Miss. and Las Vegas; as well as travel and other special events.
Evans, who came to Mega from ServiceMaster, is being groomed to assume the marketing reigns from executive VP Jim Sendrak, who also oversees CE.
To house the expanded staff, Mega has relocated its headquarters from Germantown, Tenn., to larger facilities in Memphis.
“We have always been a buying group that is very conservative regarding rent, staffing and costs in general,” said Mega president Rick Bellows, president of MEGA Group USA. “But to accommodate our unprecedented growth in membership, which required us to ramp up staffing, we could no longer function out of the old office space.”
Bellows was quick to add: “We didn’t go wild on office amenities; we’re still pretty frugal and intend to stay that way.”
Mega Group’s new address is 3340 Players Club Pkwy., Suite 120, Memphis, TN 38125; its phone number is (888) 332-3344.
