Xerox’s newly minted operation to grab hold of the inkjet printer business will not be derailed by the company’s decision last week to slash 5,200 jobs from its work force and refocus its business operation on its core copier and enterprise level document systems.
A company spokesman said the inkjet endeavor, that has Xerox, Sharp and Fuji rolling out later this year a line of inexpensive printers to compete with models from Hewlett-Packard, will continue as planned.
The layoff represents about 5% of Xerox’s total work force and is a direct result of the company losing its edge in photocopy technology, said Xerox president Rock Thoman.
