WUSB Spec Targeted For End Of Year

The Wireless USB Promoter Group is soliciting contributors to the Wireless USB specification definition in hopes of completing a spec by the end of the year.

Wireless USB (WUSB) is intended for multimedia consumer electronics, PC peripherals and mobile devices with a targeted bandwidth of 480Mbps at launch with low power consumption for distances less than 10 meters, the group said.

The group (www.usb.org/wusb) said it’s committed to preserving the existing USB devices, the look and feel of wired USB, and backward compatibility to USB.

The first Wireless USB implementations will be in the form of add-in cards and dongles along with embedded solutions, the group said.

The group consists of Agere Systems, HP, Intel, Microsoft, NEC, Philips Electronics and Samsung. Key contributors are Appairent Technologies, Alereon Inc., STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Wisair.
