St. George, Utah — Wilson Electronics launched what it said are the first two in-car 4G cellular-signal boosters certified to meet the technical standards required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Both models boost the 2G, 3G and 4G signals of all four national carriers. The boosters operate in the U.S. 850MHz, 1900MHz, and 1.7/2.1GHz AWS bands as well as in bands 7 and 13 in 700MHz spectrum. It doesn’t amplify 2.5GHz-band signals used only by Sprint, which also operates in the 1900MHz and 800MHz bands.
The $179-suggested Sleek 4G amplifies the signals of a phone placed in a combination cradle/booster/charger. The $399 Mobile 4G lacks cradle and charger, but its hideaway booster amplify the signals of multiple phones in a car simultaneously and needs no physical connection with a phone. A hideaway interior antenna makes a wireless connection to any phone.
Both models offer do-it-yourself installation, and both use magnet-mount antenna.
The Mobile 4G delivers the FCC’s maximum allowed gain of 50dB, and the Sleek 4G features 23dB gain.
The Sleek 4G is shipping, and the Mobile 4G will be available in early April.
Both models extend cellular-signal range, reduce the number of dropped calls, improve call quality, and extend a phone’s battery life, the company said.
