Western Digital, SanDisk Join To Build Hybrid Storage Drives

Irvine, Calif. — Western Digital and SanDisk reported they are collaborating on building a series of portable hybrid storage drives.

The two companies announced a plan that has SanDisk supplying solid-state disk (SSD) storage for the new hybrid drives.

The first product created by the collaboration is the Western Digital WD Black. The WD Black has 500GB of HDD capacity built into a 5mm-thick drive containing a 2.5-inch platter, almost half of the older versions that did not utilize an SSD.

The WD Black is now shipping to OEMs.
