Vacuum Cleaners Set 3rd-Qtr. Mark

NORTH CANTON, OHIO -Factory sales of full-size household vacuum cleaners rose 5.5 percent to a record 4.71 million units during the third quarter, according to the latest shipment report from the Vacuum Cleaner Manufacturers Association (VCMA).

The group described the wholesale volume as “the highest for any third quarter in history.”

Sales for the first nine months of the year grew 11.6 percent to 14.46 million units, which also sets a record for vacuum cleaner shipments, the group said.

Sales of central vacuum cleaners, which were not included in the shipment tallies, also bode well for 2000. According to VCMA, factory sales for the first nine months of the year were up 4.3 percent over the comparable period in 1999, which was the highest sales year on record for the category.

VCMA is the U.S. trade association for manufacturers of household electric floor care products. Founded in 1913, it is purportedly one of the oldest trade associations in the country. Information about vacuum cleaner manufacturers and their products can be found on the group’s website at www.vacuumcleaners.org.
