TomTom Finds U.S. Market With 3-D Nav

TomTom USA is launching the first handheld navigation package that offers “lifelike” 3D map views vs. the common bird’s eye view of other navigation products, said the company.

TomTom’s new Navigator also features highly compressed maps so users can store several states’ maps on the handheld for navigating “as you go,” rather than simply downloading “point-A-to-B” directions, said president Jocelyn Vigreux. “Rather than choosing Boston to New York, I can take the entire east coast with me, every single Chinese restaurant, every street.”

Navigator is available for all Pocket PC handhelds and includes door-to-door navigation, compatibility with Pocket Outlook, dynamic re-routing and 4 million points of interest.

A software-only version (which can be used with any GPS add-on) carries an estimated price of $179. GPS hardware plus software is available at $299 and a Bluetooth package is expected to sell in the $499 range. This represents TomTom’s first foray into the United States. Established in 1991, it has been selling Navigator products in Europe.
