Thomson Readies e-Books For November Release

New York – Thomson Consumer Electronics, GemstarTV-Guide and a host of book publishing firms gathered today here to express their support for Thomson’s two RCA-branded e-Books and report it will start shipping at the end of November.

Thomson, which is licensing the e-Book technology from Gemstar, plans to have the REB 1100 and REB 1200 in stores by Thanksgiving, said Thomson New Media Services vice president Lou Lenzi, with respective suggested retail prices of $199 and $699.

The primary difference between the two models is the 1200 has a larger, color LCD. Both models feature an internal modem, 8MB of memory, a CompactFlash slot for additional memory, an onboard dictionary and a touch screen.

The devices connect directly to the Internet, eliminating the need for a PC, and can download a 700-page book in about 90 seconds, said Gemstar’s Dr. Henry Yuen.

Six new books will be ready for download when the e-Books hit retail, including Patricia Cornwell’s The Last Precinct, Robert Ludlum’s Prometheus Deception and Brad Meltzer’s First Council.
