TCL emphasized its commitment to LCD TVs with the announcement it will soon begin construction on what it called the world’s largest Gen 11 LCD panel fabrication plant.
The plant — located in Shenzhen, China, and estimated by the company to cost $7.8 billion — will be constructed by China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT), a subsidiary of TCL Group. It will produce flat-panel displays for the 65-inch and larger LCD TV markets.
“As TCL grows rapidly in the U.S., the expanded capabilities of CSOT are critical in helping us keep up with demand,” said Chris Larson, TCL sales and marketing VP. “We already benefit from a vertically integrated supply chain that gives us cost advantages over our competitors, and this investment will allow us to take a leadership position in large size TVs.”
TCL, which is perhaps best known in the U.S. for its Roku TVs, said it intends to become the No. 3 brand in the U.S. by 2020. It recently revealed plans for expanded distribution to achieve this goal.
