Swann Dives Into Smart-Home Pool With Camera-Centric Security Hub

SANTA FE SPRINGS, CALIF. — Swann’s longawaited entry into the home-automation market has arrived with the retail availability of the app-controlled Swann-One home-security ecosytem.

The system is built around the SwannOne Smart hub. The hub, compatible with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave and Zigbee, along with a free iOS or Android app, controls a broad line of Swann-brand and third-party security cameras, smoke, fire and carbon-monoxide alarms, indoor and outdoor sirens, smart thermostats, smart plugs and lighting.

A number of plug-and-play expandable starter kits will be available that bundle basic alarm solutions, video monitoring, energy management and appliance control. Each kit is fully customizable with add-on accessories sold separately so it can be scaled up or down to reflect the changing requirements of the user.

The SwannOne hub will also work with third-party add-ons, such as Philips Hue lighting products, Kwikset SmartCode Deadbolt Locks and 3M Command energy products. Compatibility with other brands, including Nest thermostats, will roll out soon via automatic firmware updates.

The SwannOne cameras feature a tamper-detection feature that sends an alert to your phone if an intruder attempts to break or move the camera. Builtin microphones analyze all sounds and identify alertworthy events such as breaking glass, baby cries, car alarms and gunshots. The system will only send a notification for major noise disturbances, and can distinguish innocent sounds like a dropped wine glass on kitchen tile, the company said.

If a user is not reachable, SwannOne can connect with emergency services via an optional professional security monitoring service. The professional service requires no commitment or contract and can be activated on as little as a daily basis and cancelled any time.

Energy management is also a key differentiator of the SwannOne system. Connected smart plugs can turn appliances on or off based on custom rules and schedules.

The SwannOne system rolls out at Fred Meyer, Fry’s Electronics and SwannOne.com. Other retail options will be added in time.

The kits retail from $299 to $699.
