Consumer Cellular Pops Tablets

MVNO Consumer Cellular might target the 50-plus age group, but it’s not set in its ways. The company, which offers no-contract postpaid service over the AT&T network, launched its first tablet, the LTE-equipped Huawei MediaPad T1-10 at $200. The tablet is available only through the company’s website and call centers, not through retailers, which include Sears and Target.

Windows Mobile 10 Notches Win

Windows Phone 10 notched a win with T-Mobile’s launch of the carrier’s first Windows Mobile 10 smartphone, the $139 Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL. The Fierce XL will join only one other Windows phone in T-Mobile’s selection, a pre-owned Lumia 435 running Windows 8.1. The only other carrier offering a Windows Mobile 10 phone is AT&T, which offers the Lumia 950. AT&T also offers the Windows 8.1 Lumia 640XL.

For its part, Verizon offers three Windows 8.1 phones from Microsoft, LG and HTC. Sprint currently offers no Windows phones. Microsoft offers Lumia Windows Mobile 10 phones unlocked on its web store.

Virgin Revamps Plans

Virgin Mobile, one of Sprint’s prepaid cellular brands, has revamped its lineup of unlimited plans, mostly offering slightly more gigabytes of high-speed data per dollar than their predecessors. The plans also offer a lower opening price of $30 instead of $35.

The revisions follow a December quarter in which Sprint lost 491,000 prepaid customers compared with 410,000 additions in the prior-year quarter.

Like before, the new Virgin plans offer unlimited talk and text and unlimited 2G data after high-speed caps are hit. Under the new plans, consumers get 500MB of high-speed data at $30, 4GB at $40 and 6GB at $50.

T-Mobile Adds Data To Prepaid Plans

T-Mobile revamped its prepaid plans to offer more high-speed LTE data at the same prices of $40, $50 or $60 per month. The company previously offered 1GB at $40 but upped that to 3GB. The $50 plans goes to 5GB from 3GB, and the $60 plan gets 10GB, up from 5GB. All plans feature unlimited talk and text. Subscribers also get Music Unlimited to stream unlimited amounts of music for free from select providers and unlimited Binge On 480p video streaming from select providers.
