Sony Adds Three SKUs To Notebook Line

Sony continued to refresh its Vaio notebook line with the introduction of its K-Series notebook.

The K-Series consists of the PCG-K13, PCG-K15 and PCG-K17. With each weighing in at over 7 pounds, the series is being sold as desktop replacement notebooks for consumers looking for a full multimedia package in a portable form factor, the company said.

The top-end K-17 uses a 3.04GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and features a dual format DVD burner (capable of writing to Dash and Plus media), a 15-inch LCD, 80GB hard drive, 512MB of RAM and 802.11b/g wireless networking. It is expected to start shipping this month with a suggested retail price under $2,000.

The K-15 has a slightly less powerful 2.8GHz Pentium 4 processor and a 60GB hard drive, but otherwise mirrors the K-17’s capabilities.

The K-13’s details were not available, but Sony said it would ship at the same time as the others with a suggested retail price starting at $1,400, depending upon its configuration.

All three models use Sony’s proprietary Xbrite display technology and have Memory Stick slots.

The K-Series rollout follows Sony’s announcement in early February of the PCG-TRA3, PCG-505EX and Z1WA notebooks. Unlike the K-Series, these are smaller, lighter and geared toward true mobile use. (See TWICE, Feb. 23, page 41).
