New York – Silicon Image today announced the first SuperMHL port processor to reach the market, paving the way for one-cable connectivity for next-generation 8K video products.
The SiI9779 chipset will support a wide range of next-generation display technologies including 8K/60fps (7,680 by 4,320) video, SMPTE-standard high dynamic range, 48-bit deep color and the International Telecommunication Union’s BT.2020 wide color gamut recommendation.
It also supports object-oriented and high-bit extraction audio formats such as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and 3D audio, and is compatible with the HDCP 2.2 digital rights management platform.
Silicon Image’s processor will help Japan’s Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry’s meet its goal of having an 8K video broadcasting standard in place for the Tokyo Olympic Games is 2020. The Ministry plans to test the technology at the Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016.
The 32-pin SuperMHL connector cables are reversible and can carry concurrent video, data and power charging.
The processor supports one SuperMHL input/output port and three HDMI 2.0 inputs.
