Mordaunt-Short Adds 2 Speaker Series

Speaker manufacturer Mordaunt-Short, which distributes in the United States through Marantz, announced two new speaker series for multichannel home theater systems.

The two series include a satellite/subwoofer multichannel speaker package called Genie, and a lineup of in-wall speakers, which are sold as separate pieces, in the Avant Architect line.

The company’s Genie MS400 package consists of four satellite speakers, a dedicated center-channel and subwoofer. It will debut in late August at a $1,900 suggested retail price. The satellites will also be sold in pairs, and the center channel speaker will also be available separately.

Genie’s satellite speakers feature an unusual cabinet shape said to be “internally profiled to minimize reflection and standing waves.” The cabinet is made from a rigid die-cast alloy.

The system offers 4-inch midrange/bass drivers based on the company’s V-Form technology. The tweeters are aluminum-dome wide-dispersion models.

A dedicated center speaker uses a D’Apollito design configuration, and the subwoofer is downward firing with 200 watts of power and a 10-inch long-throw driver.

The Genie system also includes active room control, which enhances low-frequency room integration, and an SPL meter that is custom designed for easy use with the subwoofer. The company will supply an integrated multiposition mounting system and/or floor stands, including feet, spikes and cable management.

The Avant Architect package offers five speakers designed for in-wall and/or ceiling placement. Speakers include 1-inch aluminum dome tweeters. Other drivers are based on the company’s V-Form technology.

The lineup includes the first Mordaunt-Short models to feature a newly developed 6.5-inch bass driver with radial ribbing. Speakers are offered in white but can be painted for custom placement. A fully isolated mounting system is said to eliminate re-radiation from walls while preventing sound transfer.

Models include the AW151 ($225 suggested retail, each) two-way in-wall loudspeaker with 5.25-inch bass driver, radial ribbing and a 1-inch liquid-cooled tweeter.

The AW153 ($325 each) is a 2.5-way in-wall speaker with dual-5.25-inch bass drivers that is configured the same as the AW152 but offered in a smaller enclosure for between-stud mounting in certain center-channel applications.
