Mitsubishi HDTV Ships Next Week

New York – Mitsubishi yesterday officially launched the HDTV Digital Light Processing technology-equipped WD-65000, but with a retail sticker price of $15,000 – 50 percent higher than the company originally stated.

The 65-inch rear projection WD-65000 starts shipping in the last week of August and will be available through Mitsubishi’s specialty dealer channel. Robert Perry, Mitsubishi’s director of marketing, said the company had erred in May and set the initial price to low to make a profit.

In other product news, Mitsubishi will roll out its next set top box digital decoder sometime in late September with a $799 suggested retail price. The company is getting close to eliminating the set top boxes and building the digital decoder into the TV.

“We will continue with our set top box practice until we feel the technology for the next step is ready – and we believe we are almost there,” Perry said.

With the shipment of the new set top box, Perry said he believes sales of those products will quickly ramp up.
