Magellan’s Cloud-connected $229-suggested SmartGPS 5390 PND

Santa Clara, Calif. — Magellan launched its latest Cloud-connected portable navigation device (PND), the SmartGPS 5390 at a suggested $229.

The device is the second PND in the company’s SmartGPS product lineup. The first model shipped last year at a suggested $249 and is now priced at a suggested $199.

The 5390 is available on the Magellan website and will hit the HSN airways on March 28. The product will be rolled out later to additional retailers.

Magellan’s SmartGPS PNDs connect via Bluetooth to a cellphone or via Wi-Fi to a mobile hot spot to receive pushed location-based subscription-free content, including Yelp and Foursquare reviews and offers from nearby businesses.

The PNDs are positioned as offering “a connected car experience for a fraction of the price of a premium in-dash infotainment system,” the company said.

The company also plans May availability of a Cloud-connected PND in its series of products for recreational vehicles. That product, the $349-suggested RoadMate RV9490T-LMB, comes with some of the Cloud-based services of the SmartGPS PNDs but not all. Live Yelp and Foursquare social reviews and offers, for example, aren’t available.

Other Cloud-connected SmartGPS features include real-time fuel-price updates, local weather and traffic-camera updates. Traffic-data updates are delivered via FM. The PNDs also feature Amber Alerts, Redbox and Geocaching. The PNDs receive Amber Alerts in the area in which a motorist is driving, access Redbox to browse top 20 movies available in the area, and enable users to reserve a movie from the device. The Geocaching function lets users view locations where geo-cached items are stashed.

Pushed data is displayed on tiles on the PND’s display next to the navigation map.

In addition, the Magellan SmartGPS 5390 comes with iOS and Android smartphone apps that let users browse locations from a variety of sources, then send those locations to the PND for navigation. Destinations and contacts are automatically synced between the SmartGPS 5390 and a smartphone, computer or tablet via automatic Cloud syncing.

The SmartGPS 5390 features a 5-inch capacitive LCD touchscreen with multitouch, free lifetime map updates, free FM-delivered traffic alerts and highway-lane assist. It also has a TI Cortex A8 1GHz processor, 4GB memory, MicroSD slot for storing additional maps and a MicroUSB connector.
