Lowe’s Revamps Iris Smart Home System

Lowe’s revamped its DIY Iris smart-home system with faster performance, lower prices, and a selection of products that has grown to 75.

The second-generation system is available online at IrisbyLowes.com and in Lowe’s stores.

The hub and many devices have also been downsized to look sleeker than before, and the system’s smartphone app has been redesigned for easier use, the home-improvement chain said.

The center of the system is a new $59.99 Smart Hub made by CentraLite with a smaller footprint, a more powerful processor, additional memory, and battery backup. It also adds Bluetooth but continues to control devices equipped with ZigBee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi and AllJoyn technology.

The hub is now available only as a standalone product for use with starter packs launched at lower prices. One starter pack at $99 is a security package that includes two Iris Contact sensors, a motion sensor, and a smart keypad with an audible siren. A $129 home-automation package includes two contact sensors, a motion sensor, a smart plug, and a smart button that delivers remote control of other devices.

Seven of Iris’s core devices have also been redesigned with sleeker, smaller profiles. They include a contact sensor at $22.99, a smart plug at $34.99, a motion sensor at $29.99, a help pendant at $29.99, a smart button at $24.99, a smart fob at $24.99, and a smart keypad at $39.99.

The new Iris mobile app for iOS and Android devices features what the company calls a “customizable and intuitive interface.” It lets users upload photos of their family, home and connected devices to deliver “a more personalized experience,” owes said. When tapped, the app will use animation to display what is happening in the home.

In another change, the new system uses Microsoft’s Azure IoT cloud services.

Lowe’s rolled out its first-gen system in July 2012, enables homeowners to monitor and control home systems from anywhere via smart phone, tablet or computer with a free basic level of service.
