LG Bringing High-Res Music Service To Smartphones

Seoul, South Korea — High-resolution music playback, largely confined to home-audio systems and select high-end portable audio players, is moving farther into the smartphone market.

LG this month will launch a high-resolution music service for its premium smartphones in almost 70 countries, including the U.S. The service supports downloads of 24-bit/192kHz songs, said by the company to be “about six times richer and clearer than the sound quality of a typical CD (16bit/44.1kHz).” Qualifying customers will be able to download two free tracks each month with the option to purchase more songs. Pricing and the extent of the high-resolution library were unavailable at post time.

Compatible LG phones include the G4, G3, G2 and G Flex 2, which will download songs via LG’s LG SmartWorld app. The tunes will also be available at LGWorld.com.

Other-brand smartphones that play back 192/24 audio files include Samsung’s Galaxy S5, S6, S6 Edge, Note 3, Note 4 and Note 4 Edge. The high-res smartphone lineup also includes the HTC One M9 and a special-edition HTC One M8 launched last year and co-branded with the Harman Kardon name for the Sprint network.

High-res playback could also soon turn up in midtier smartphones, thanks to new Qualcomm smartphone chipsets — the Snapdragon 620 and 618 — expected to be in devices in the second half of 2015.
