JVC Debuts Pair Of Floating Everio R Camcorders

JVC is putting a new twist on the action-cam market with a pair of rugged camcorders.

Although the Everio R GZ-R550 and GZ-R440 are constructed like more traditionally shaped camcorders, they are water resistant to a depth of 16.4 feet and can even float. They are also drop-proof from a height of 4.9 feet, dust-proof, and freeze-proof down to 14 degrees F. the company said.

Other features include a five-hour battery life, the ability to record when the LCD monitor is closed, a Konica Minolta HD lens with 40x optical zoom, 2.5-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, JVC’s Falconbird image processing engine and 24Mbps recording.

Time counters for recording and playback are designed to simplify post production, while a Self Check feature for athletes automatically repeats recording and playback at set intervals. Slow-motion playback is activated by just tapping the screen, and zoom position memory returns the camcorder to a pre-set zoom position.

The Everio R GZ-R550, available in matte black for a $499 suggested retail, features AVCHD recording, built-in auto illuminating light and 32GB of internal storage.

The GZ-R440 provides 4GB of internal memory and is available in matte black and orange for $399. Both versions will be available this month.

Additional accessories can be purchased for mounting to a helmet, bike or other surface.
