Huawei has announced its patent licensing royalty rate for Wi-Fi 7 technologies, setting the fee at $0.50 per consumer-grade Wi-Fi 7 device compliant with the latest wireless networking standard.
Huawei stated the move is intended to provide manufacturers with greater transparency and predictability as adoption of Wi-Fi 7 accelerates across consumer electronics.
Wi-Fi 7, based on the IEEE 802.11be standard, is designed to deliver higher throughput, lower latency, and improved network reliability compared to previous generations. The technology is expected to support emerging applications, including AI-enabled devices, immersive entertainment, and next-generation smart home ecosystems.
Huawei said it is among the largest holders of declared essential patents related to Wi-Fi 7 and has spent the past decade developing technologies that contributed to the IEEE 802.11 standards family. According to the company, its patent licensing agreements covered more than 1.2 billion consumer electronic devices worldwide by the end of 2024.
Under the new licensing program, manufacturers can obtain licenses either through bilateral agreements or patent pools under FRAND (Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory) licensing terms.
Huawei also highlighted its continued participation in patent pool licensing. The company joined the Sisvel Wi-Fi 6 patent pool as a founding member in 2022 and serves as both a licensor and licensee. It has since expanded that involvement by joining the Sisvel Wi-Fi Multimode pool, which provides access to essential patents covering both Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 technologies through a single licensing framework.
Huawei stated that the patent pool model provides manufacturers with a streamlined licensing process while reducing transaction costs.
“Through these initiatives, Huawei continues to facilitate collaborative licensing models that balance the interests of innovators and implementers, further reinforcing its leadership in shaping a transparent and efficient global Wi-Fi licensing environment,” said Alan Fan, Huawei’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer.
