HP Taps Fiorina For President; First Female Head In Dow 30

Hewlett-Packard last week tapped Carleton “Carly” Fiorina to replace Lew Platt as president and chief executive.

Fiorina said in a conference call that her first goal will be to reinvigorate HP and introduce a sense of speed and urgency while working to integrate computing and communications technologies.

The appointment makes Fiorina the first woman to head a Dow top 30 or Fortune 50 company. She has spent the last two years as president of Lucent Technologies Global Service Provider Business.

Platt will retire as HP’s chairman at the end of 1999 and be replaced by board member Richard Hackborn.
