Las Vegas — Gibson is entering the headphones market with the launch of a new brand, Trainer by Gibson. Its first product for the brand will be Bluetooth headphones — also carrying the Trainer moniker — that were developed with Olympian Usain Bolt.
The Trainer headphones, geared toward athletes, are wireless headphones that feature a built-in LED light meant to provide security and clarity while running at night. A second, stabilizing headband, known as the AeroFlex rail, is designed to provide additional support during activity. Although the AeroFlex can’t be removed, it can be tucked beneath the standard headband.
The headphones are weather and sweat resistant; the drivers are protected by a hydroscopic mesh and the internals are sealed with silicon gaskets, Keith Michael, marketing director, Gibson Innovations USA, told TWICE.
The ear pads feature Outlast technology, which Michael said was originally developed for NASA and “utilizes phase-change materials (PCM) that absorb, store and release heat for optimal thermal comfort. Outlast technology is comparable to ice in a drink; as it changes from solid to liquid, it absorbs heat and cools the drink, keeping that drink at the desired temperature for longer.”
Battery life is listed at 10 hours. They do not feature the ability to operate as a wired model once the battery dies.
Gibson plans to sell the headphones through CE outlets, sports and lifestyle stores, and online. Availability is scheduled for April with a $239 suggested retail.
When asked if the company is planning any further models, such as an in-ear version, Michael said: “There are a number of consumers who have various requirements for their preferred headphone solution. Trainer by Gibson currently focuses on the headband solution, as this delivers the best experience for consumers exercising outdoors, not only with the secure fit achieved through AeroFlex but also the safety features such as NightNav. … An in-ear solution is a logical extension of the range.”
