As the appliance industry revs up for home automation dominance, two leading lights in kitchen majaps have brought in app partners to help get them and their end users there more quickly.
Bosch, the BSH Home Appliance badge, and Sharp Home Electronics Company of America (SHCA), have each announced respective new kitchen connections with Drop and SideChef, which provide interactive recipes and automated cooking commands for households.
Effective Aug. 21, the Drop Recipes app was fully integrated with Bosch’s smart Home Connect wall oven in the U.S. market. The pact allows Bosch consumers to access Drop’s growing digital recipe book that currently features over 700 recipes from renowned chefs and contributors including Food52, Good Housekeeping, Donal Skehan, The Kitchen Paper and The Sophisticated Gourmet.
Owners can use the app’s Drop Scale function for seamless step-by-step recipe instructions, rescaled quantities and ingredient substitutes, and to monitor and control a variety of cooking functions including recipe time and temperature for a simplified, interactive cooking experience.
“We’re excited to introduce these smart kitchen capabilities to the U.S. market as we continue on our mission to make the connected kitchen a reality for everyone,” said Drop CEO Ben Harris. “Kitchens are getting smarter, and our partnership with Bosch illustrates the value these smart functions bring to everyday life.”
Bosch is Drop’s first “official” kitchen appliance partner, although it also provides its app to GE Appliances for use in that company’s connected ovens.
Meanwhile, Sharp’s SHCA unit has cut its own deal with SideChef, a step-by-step cooking app that provides thousands of interactive recipes replete with automatic timers and how-to videos, and accepts hands-free voice commands.
The app developer is currently cooking up a customized version for all forthcoming Internet-enabled Sharp cooking appliances, beginning with the release in fall 2018 of a connected iteration of the company’s SuperSteam+ convection and steam combi-oven.
“Sharp was looking for ways to combine convenience with perfect cooking results from our next generation of smart connected home appliances,” said SHCA president Jim Sanduski. “SideChef already offers an award-winning mobile culinary platform so partnering with them to integrate cooking operation and control was an easy decision.”
