Garmin Upgrades Navigation Apps

Olathe, Kan. – Garmin has upgraded its navigation apps to integrate Glympse, the location-sharing service, and Foursquare, which provides deals and reviews of nearby businesses.

The features are available as a free update for the Garmin StreetPilot Onboard iPhone app as well as for the NAVIGON iOS and Android apps through Apple’s App Store and Google Play.

The apps deliver turn-by-turn navigation for smartphones and include onboard maps, lane guidance, speed limit warnings, real-time traffic and public transit routing, and other features.

With Glympse integrated into the app, users click on a Glympse icon, select any recipient from their address book, and choose how long to share their location with recipients. The selected recipients get a text or email message with a link to a Glympse tracking map, which shows the sender’s location, arrival time and speed.

With Foursquare integration, users can search from within the app for businesses such as restaurants and special deals and directly navigate there with just a few clicks, the company said. Users who link their Foursquare account to the app will also be able to check into venues and view personalized POI suggestions.

For a limited time through Jan.7, Garmin is also reducing the price of its apps by 25 percent. StreetPilot Onboard iPhone USA goes to $39.99, StreetPilot Onboard iPhone North America goes to $44.99, NAVIGON iOS USA goes to $39.99, NAVIGON iOS North America goes to $44.99, NAVIGON iOS MyRegion goes to $22.99, NAVIGON Android USA goes to $39.95, and NAVIGON Android North America goes to $44.95.
