Epson And Canon Introduce Host Of Photo Printers

ORLANDO, FLA. -Even as digital image printing solutions infiltrate the retail channel via the kiosk, home photo printing technology continues to improve as Epson and Canon debuted several new photo printers at the PMA trade show, here, targeted to the digital camera owner and enthusiast.

Epson announced the Stylus Photo 780, 890 and 1280 inkjet printers. The new line replaces the Stylus 870 and 1270 printers. The Stylus 780 is purportedly the first six-color photo printer for less than $200.

The Stylus Photo 780, 890 and 1280 feature up to 2,880 x 720dpi print resolution and Epson’s Advanced Micro Piezo inkjet technology-a six-color photo ink system. These printers, now shipping, also feature 4-picoliter droplets for continuous-tone prints.

Additionally, all three printers include Epson’s “BorderFree” photo printing technology, which allows customers to print borderless photos in a variety of frame-ready, photographic sizes, such as 4 x 6 and 5 x 7 inches, without perforations or visible white margins.

The Stylus Photo 890 and 1280 will both include a newly designed paper holder accessory that will allow customers to print multiple 4 x 6-inch snapshots on 4-inch rolls.

The Stylus Photo 780, which will retail for $199 ($149 after a $50 rebate), can produce 8 x 10-inch prints and handle traditional printing. Included software programs are ArcSoft PhotoImpression 3.0, Epson Film Factory and Qbeo PhotoGenetics TE.

The Stylus Photo 890 can print all of the same sizes as the 780, in addition to 44-inch long panoramic photos and continuous roll printing with the included roll-paper holder. It comes bundled with ArcSoft PhotoImpression 3.0, ArcSoft PhotoStudio 2000, Qbeo PhotoGenetics 2.0 and Epson’s Film Factory TE. This printer carries a suggested retail price of $299.

The Photo 1280 includes a wider, 13-inch carriage, offering a greater selection of print sizes including as 11 x 14 and 13 x 44 inches. Like the 890, this model includes a roll-paper holder for continuous edge-to-edge snapshot printing. It comes bundled with Adobe Photoshop LE, Qbeo PhotoGenetics TE and Epson Film Factory TE. The suggested retail price is $499.

Professional options for the 1280 include an external Ethernet card and Epson Style RIP (postscript software), which will be available in April for $179 and $99, respectively.

Canon expanded its line of digital imaging equipment with the introduction of the Card Photo Printer CP-10. Compatible with Canon’s new PowerShot S300 Digital Elph, A20 and A10 cameras, the CP-10 allows users to control all print settings directly from the camera’s LCD monitor. Printer data is then transferred to the CP-10 directly through a dedicated interface cable.

The printer is dye sublimation and produces credit-card-sized color prints in 56 seconds, with rounded edges. It features 300-dpi resolution and UV overcoat for image protection, and is compatible with sticker paper. The CP-10 will be available in the second quarter for a suggested retail price of $399. Ink/paper sets will be available in 36-sheet packages or in 18-sheet sticker sets.
