Eclipse Leaving Retail Channel, Keeps Car Dealers

The Eclipse 12-volt brand will disappear from the retail aftermarket after a run of 21 years, but the Eclipse name will live on in the aftermarket expediter channel.

Parent company Fujitsu Ten Corp. of America confirmed plans to discontinue sales of Eclipse mobile audio, video and navigation products in the struggling retail aftermarket in North America, Latin America and South America.

For now, shipments of Eclipse products to retailers will continue on a “very limited basis” through March, said Michel Odle, Eclipse sales and marketing VP. “Going forward, a single distribution point will be established to support continued sales to select car dealers of the Eclipse dealer-option products,” he added. The distribution point will be in place by the end of February within the next 60 days.

Parent Fujitsu Ten will continue to provide warranty and support to Eclipse owners, including navigation map updates.

Fujitsu will merge the Eclipse business with its existing OEM car electronics unit to expand Fujitsu's OEM business.

“The market for advanced in-vehicle technologies is bigger than ever,” Odle said. “What is declining is demand for the products and technologies currently being offered to consumers through the aftermarket channels. The market is still there, and growing. However, the demand in the market is for more advanced functionality beyond that of a basic audio or navigation system.”

In the 1980s, Eclipse became the first aftermarket autosound company to introduce a digital data bus for car audio components.
