The DVD +RW Alliance said its blank media will incorporate the Video Content Protection System (VCPS) mandated by the Federal Communications Commission by July 1 this year.
The VCPS will pick up the Broadcast Flag, which is a code embedded in a digital television program, and then encrypt the program so it cannot be illegally recorded and rebroadcast.
Kevin Saldanha, Hewlett-Packard’s representative in the Alliance, said the VCPS will be added to both the blank media and hardware at no additional cost. The system was co-developed by HP and Philips and uses a 128-bit encryption code.
