The Hopper 3, introduced earlier this year, also stores and plays Dish’s own 4K VOD content, which is downloaded overnight by satellite and broadband connection for storage on the Hopper’s 2TB hard drive.
The DVR has offered a Netflix app since February, but now the app accesses Netflix original programming in 4K, including Marvel's "Daredevil" and "House of Cards." Netflix plans to provide more than 600 hours of 4K programming by the end of this year, said Vivek Khemka, Dish EVP/CTO.
Although Hopper 3 supports 4K HDR, it does not yer supprt Netflix's HDR progamming, a Dish spokesperson added. Hopper 3 was available out of the gate with HDR support as well as support for 60fps 10-bit 4K and HDCP 2.2 copy protection.
Netflix recommends an Internet connection speed of at least 25 megabits per second to stream Ultra HD titles.
Besides 4K playback, the Hopper 3 offers 16 tuners, on-screen display of four separate 1080p programs at a time, and a universal search function.
