DirecTV Offers New Subscribers Free AOL

EL SEGUNDO, CALIF. — DirecTV announced a new national marketing promotion for its direct-to-home satellite TV services that will give new residential subscribers of the DBS service a 12-month America Online membership free of charge.

Under the deal, customers qualify for one-year of free AOL dial-up service if they purchase a DirecTV system between April 26 and June 17 and activate by July 14 one year of Total Choice programming totaling $41.99 a month or higher. The offer also applies to new subscribers of DirecTV Para Todos Spanish language programming, if they purchase a multi-satellite system within the same period and activate a year of Opcion Extra Especial programming by July 14.

The AOL membership will be activated after a qualifying DirecTV customer sends in a redemption form that is mailed to new subscribers after programming activation.

DirecTV also said it will continue to offer its free system installation promotion for new subscribers who purchase a system between April 26 and July 25, and activate Select Choice programming (running $21.99 a month or higher) by Aug. 5.

The offer is good only for AOL’s standard dial-up Internet service and does not apply to the DirecPC Powered By AOL broadband satellite service now offered by select retailers including Circuit City stores. However, a spokesman for Hughes Network Systems, which facilitates the Powered By program for AOL, said he expects retail sales people will make customers aware of the broadband satellite option when they come in looking to take advantage of the DirecTV/AOL promotion.
