Burlington, Mass. — Nuance Communications revealed Monday that its voice-recognition technology is being used in a new DirecTV Voice Search feature for a DirecTV app, which is currently in beta and available from Google Play and the App Store.
Nuance’s Dragon TV voice technology enables consumers to use spoken commands to easily search for program information and content with their Android or iOS phones.
By integrating Nuance’s voice capabilities into the DirecTV app, consumers can speak a search command into their phone, Nuance said in a statement.
“The amount of media content that subscription TV service providers like DirecTV offer is incredible — the options are endless and, as such, can often be hard to discover,” said Michael Thompson, executive VP and general manager, Nuance Mobile. “Dragon TV lets people cut through the guides and menus to get direct access to the shows and movies they want to watch.”
Nuance said Dragon TV technology will turn smartphones into “an intuitive and intelligent DirecTV remote that lets people find shows and movies among the hundreds of channels and thousands of programs, as well as perform basic TV functions with simple commands.”
Dragon TV can be integrated directly into a television or set-top box or can be implemented as a second-screen application on a tablet or smartphone, providing flexibility for the user.
The Voice Search feature is currently available as part of a DirecTV app nationwide beta and is compatible with both iPhone/iPod Touch and Android devices.
To access the function, DirecTV subscribers can download the DirecTV app from the Apple App Store or Google Play to their smartphone and have a broadband-connected HD DVR (HR24+) in their home.
