Core Categories Up 12% In February: AHAM

Factory shipments of the six major white-goods categories rose 11.7 percent in February, to about 3.1 million units, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).

Volume for the so-called AHAM 6 categories — washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, ranges and ovens — more than doubled from January, when year-over-year shipments grew 4.7 percent.

The increases could be attributed in large measure to Presidents’ Day weekend, which has become a key period on the industry’s promotional calendar.

Leading the pack were stand-alone freezers, up 15.7 percent for the month, followed by gas and electric ranges, ahead by 14.8 percent year over year

Full-size refrigerators were a close third, up 14.4 percent in February, while dishwashers were up 10.1 percent and clothes washers and dryers together rose 9.3 percent.

Bringing up the rear were wall ovens, which rose a more modest but still robust 7.4 percent.

Total shipments of all major appliances slipped 2.7 percent last month, to 5.1 million units, on steep declines for room air and dehumidifiers, which together fell 44.8 percent.

AHAM’s monthly shipment data covers the U.S. market, including imported and domestically produced products, but not exports. The February figures cover the four weeks from Jan. 31-Feb. 27.
