HOUSTON -- Compaq today introduced and started shipping a sub-$1,000 notebook computer.
The Presario 1200 XL-450 features an AMD K6-2 450Mhz processor, has 32MB of RAM, a 5GB hard drive, 24x CD-ROM drive and a 12.1-inch LCD. The 1200 only will be available through Compaq's Built For You in-store kiosks and direct from Compaq. Customers will have the option of boosting the RAM amount at time of purchase.
The notebook's software bundle will include Microsoft Works 2000, Encarta 2000, Money 2000 and Word 2000, the Microsoft Office Small Business Edition Software, which includes Word 2000, Excel 2000, Outlook 2000, Publisher 2000 and Small Business Tools.
