Clarion To Connect Smartphones, Cars

TOKYO — Clarion is the latest automotive
electronics supplier to team with
Nokia and the Consumer Electronics
for Automotive (CE4A) group to bring
to market a standardized interface that
connects smartphones to OEM and aftermarket
in-car infotainment systems.

Earlier this year, Alpine joined the
effort to promote the standard, called
Terminal Mode.

The proposed standard would enable
drivers to access smartphone applications
via a large, fixed screen in the vehicle and
use a vehicle’s “hands-free” controls to
control them. It would also simplify the
use of turn-by-turn directions delivered
to a smartphone via Nokia’s Ovi Maps
smartphone application as well as provide
an easier way to access other smartphone
content, including music and automotive
specific widgets from the Ovi
Store, Nokia said.

“By integrating the Terminal Mode
technology into in-car information systems
such as car navigation developed
by Clarion,” said Clarion president Tatsuhiko
Izumi, “we will be able to bring to
customers the vast array of applications
and services available to smartphones on
in-car devices.” The integration of in-car
systems with smartphones “will provide
better user experiences for consumers
and lead to radical changes in in-car information
systems,” he added.

Clarion will also use the technology
as part of its effort to accelerate the
“development and greater commercial
dominance of in-car information systems
for the Europe and North America
markets where Nokia has a strong
presence, as well as China and other
emerging markets,” he said.
