Canalys: Apple Tops In Wearable Bands In Q2

Palo Alto, Calif. – Apple hasn’t been in the smart watch business for very long, but it already became the world’s top vendor of wearable bands in the second quarter, besting  Fitbit, Xiaomi and all other brands despite the Apple Watch’s significantly higher pricing, research company Canalys Americas contends.

Apple sold 4.2 million units in the second quarter even though early sales were hindered by missing the fourth-quarter selling season and by supply constraints in the first couple of months of availability, Canalys said.

Despite the success, Apple and other vendors “still face important challenges to make the smart watch a breakout hit,” said Chris Jones, VP and principal analyst. “Improvements in performance, battery life and sensor integration are needed to make future models more attractive, but it is the quality of third-party apps that will determine whether the Apple Watch will be a long-term success.”
