Bosch’s 24-inch stainless steel and glass-door refrigerators have earned a 2016 Energy Star Emerging Technology Award for their use of an environmentally friendly refrigerant.
The accolades are given annually by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to recognize innovative technologies that meet rigorous performance criteria to reduce energy use and lower greenhouse gas emissions without sacrificing features or functionality.
Bosch, the premium BSH Home Appliance brand, received its Emerging Tech Award within the “innovative refrigerant systems” category for best available low-global-warming refrigerant systems that help protect the environment and provide additional energy savings to consumers.
Bosch was commended for its use of R600a refrigerant, a more efficient, sustainable and environmentally- friendly alternative to the widely-used R134a refrigerant.
BSH described R600a as an eco-friendly natural gas that that can improve the energy efficiency of refrigeration systems by upwards of 10 percent while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
According to BSH government affairs VP Manfred Staebler, “R600a refrigerant is widely used in many countries because the economic and environmental benefits are far superior to R134a refrigerant currently used in the majority of U.S. household refrigerators.”
BSH president/CEO Christofer von Nagel noted that “sustainability is part of our company’s DNA, and we are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the entire life cycle of our appliances, from manufacturing to performance, and recycling.”
In bestowing the award, EPA Energy Star program director Ann Bailey described the R600a refrigerant as innovative and Bosch as a “forward-thinking” company.
The brand currently offers five U.S. models with R600a refrigerant: B10CB80NVB, B10CB80NVS, B10CB80NVW, B11CB50SSS and B11CB81SSS.
In addition to the Emerging Tech Award, Bosch’s 500 Series 24-inch counter-depth bottom freezer (B11) earned a third-consecutive Energy Star Most Efficient label, while its 800 Series 24-inch glass door counter-depth bottom freezer (B10) lineup was certified “Most Efficient” for 2016.
