AT&T, SiriusXM Expand Telematics Offerings

New York – Satellite-radio provide Sirius XM and AT&T announced separate initiatives that expand their telematics offerings.

SiriusXM announced that a telematics platform developed by it will be launched for the first time in select 2016-model-year Nissan vehicles, starting with Maxima.

For its part, AT&T teamed up with telematics provider Autonet Mobile for the first time, enabling Autonet to offer 4G LTE connected-car service.

Autonet’s service will provide such services as remote door locking/unlocking, in-vehicle Wi-Fi connections to the Internet, parental controls to manage teenage drivers, delivery of over-the-air software updates, and checking vehicle diagnostics via cellphone.

“Offerings such as automotive over-the-air updates will work well with the higher quality network that AT&T’s 4G LTE can provide,” said Autonet co-founder Sterling Pratz.

Autonet, founded in 2005, provides connected-car services to Chrysler Fiat, GM, Maserati, Subaru and other major auto makers.

AT&T began to expand its telematics presence in 2014 when it began rolling out 4G LTE service for telematics services for the first time, initially for GM’s OnStar service in select new vehicles. GM previously used Verizon 3G service in existing vehicle models. Last month, AT&T announced it will power the Audi Connect telematics service in all 2016 Audi vehicles in the U.S.

In another advance, AT&T announced that is upgrading telematics services for the aftermarket Audiovox Car Connection Elite, which plugs into a car’s data port. The new $99 model also adds 4G LTE.

For Nissan vehicles, the new SiriusXM service features vehicle security, vehicle health monitoring, remote access services, and other services. The NissanConnect Services were developed in coordination with Nissan.

Three levels of service include:

NissanConnect Service: The base package includes emergency services, including automatic collision notification, emergency calling, stolen-vehicle locator, and maintenance alerts such as customized Messaging and maintenance reminders.

NissanConnect Services Premium: The mid-tier package adds remote start and remote door lock/unlock as well as such location-monitoring alerts as boundary alert, valet alert and curfew alert.

NissanConnect Services Premium Plus: The top-tier package adds destination services such as assisted search, connected search and journey planner.

In September 2012, as part of a plan to diversify beyond satellite and Internet radio, Sirius XM announced that it developed its own telematics platform and that Nissan would be the first to offer it.

Then in 2013, SiriusXM announced it would acquire Agero’s Connected Vehicle Unit. Agero provided connected-vehicle services to more automotive manufacturers than any other telematics provider, Sirius XM said at the time. The automakers include Acura, BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Lexus, Nissan and Toyota.
