Amazon.com, one of the leading e-commerce sites in the world, is entering the consumer electronics market with Amazon.com Electronics.
The electronics selection includes digital camcorders, computer peripherals, TVs and everything in between, according to the company, which will also provide "detailed buying guides and expert product reviews."
Amazon.com is no stranger to the CE business, selling product in its Amazon.com Gifts store. The company said that the CE area will feature "a no-risk return policy" supported by its well-regarded customer service department "so customers can buy electronics . online with complete confidence."
The online site indicates it can capitalize on the perceived mistrust of consumer electronics retailers by the public. According to its survey, which was conducted by Impulse Research of Los Angeles and polled about 2600 people nationwide between June 25 and 29, said the following:
- 80% polled said they postponed or delayed purchase of an electronics product because of the difficulties of shopping in stores;
- 36% said they found it difficult to choose the right brands or models and 34% said they had difficulty understanding product features;
- 71% said they had encountered salespeople who did not know the products, while 65% said it was hard even to find salespeople in an electronics store;
- Respondents said the three most painful shopping experiences were purchasing consumer electronics (50%), casual clothing (25%) and toys & games (16%)
(Not surprisingly Amazon.com also debuted today Amazon.com Toys & Games.)
This morning's featured products include: Diamond Multimedia's Rio PMP300 MP3 Player for $149.99, which Amazon.com claims a saving of $20; and Hewlett Packard's LaserJet 1100xi printer at $389.99, "you save $110." Among the digital cameras featured, the "Best In Class" is the Olympus C-2000 zoom digital camera at a $899.99, a claimed savings of $100.
Brands such as 3Com, Toshiba, Sony, JVC, Nakamichi, JBL and Panasonic are also featured on the site. Product categories listed are: camcorders, CD players and recorders, cameras, computer add-ons, DVD players, home audio, home office, home theater, PDAs, phones, portable audio & video, printers, scanners, TVs and VCRs.
