Acer Officially Entering VR Headset Market

Acer and Sweden-based game creator Starbreeze AB have officially formed a previously announced joint venture to bring virtual-reality headsets to the market.

The new company, Acer Starbreeze, expects to begin shipping StarVR head-mounted displays in “small volume in 2016,” with volume production in 2017. Acer and Starbreeze each hold a 50-percent stake.

According to the companies, the StarVR headsets provide an immersive 210-degree horizontal field of view with customized optics that allow users to move their eyes freely in any direction without the sensation of wearing blinders that some conventional VR displays bring. The headset features dual Quad HD displays for a total panoramic definition of 5,120 by 1,440 pixels. Both the horizontal field and resolution outdo those of popular consumer headsets currently available including the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

However, Acer has not made it clear if the StarVR will be marketed to consumers. Starbreeze has thus far concentrated on the commercial gaming space, with plans to open a VR arcade — the StarCade — in Los Angeles this year to feature some of its popular game titles, including Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons andPayDay 2, as well as The Walking Dead VR Experience.

Earlier this year Acer announced its Predator 17 X gaming laptop computer, which uses an Nvidia GTX 980 desktop graphics card for VR computing power.
