ZigBee Adds Features In 2.1 Update

San Ramon, Calif. — An updated ZigBee Home Automation standard improves security-sensor battery life to more than seven years, supports additional home devices such as smart appliances, and simplifies installation and set-up, the ZigBee Alliance announced.

In ratifying the ZigBee Home Automation 1.2 standard, the alliance said the standard is available for product development. The new version of the wireless mesh-network, low-power home-control standard is fully interoperable with earlier versions, the associated noted.

The spec standardizes pairing of devices to simplify installation and maintenance for consumers and custom installers, the alliance said. The spec also adds support for additional devices such as smart appliances and electrical measurement products, and it enhances functions in devices such as door locks.

The spec can be used in new devices that will raise consumer awareness of their energy usage without a data connection to a utility company, the alliance added.

The association will host an on-line webinar August 1 on the spec. Trade members can register at https://www4.gotomeeting.com/register/356171375.
