XM Will Develop Real-Time Parking

Washington — XM Satellite Radio said it forged an agreement to develop a real-time parking service for navigation systems with Standard Parking and Quixote Transportation Technologies.

The concept for this service, XM ParkingLink, was demonstrated at International CES in January.

Using a vehicle’s navigation system, XM ParkingLink shows drivers up-to-the-minute space availability at designated Standard Parking facilities using color-keyed icons to indicate the percentage of available spaces in each facility. The companies are working together to develop national capability for the concept and to bring the service to market, XM said.

Standard Parking operates more than 1,900 parking facilities in about 300 cities throughout North America. It manages parking operations at airports, sporting arenas, retail locations, hospitals and other areas.

Quixote Transportation Technologies has developed and installed sensors, embedded in road networks and parking facilities, which capture traffic-flow information.
