XM Removes Channels From AOL

Washington — XM Satellite Radio said it will no longer offer its program channels on AOL Radio, now that AOL Radio announced it is switching to an advertising-based format.

XM had previously offered 80 music channels with no commercials via AOL. Those stations will cease airing on AOL on May 1, but they will continue to be offered online via XM Radio Online’s subscription service. If users join by May 30, the monthly fee for XM Radio Online will be $2.99 for six months in a special promotion, said XM. The standard fee is $7.99/month. Users may also sign up for a 14-day free trial.

XM’s announcement followed news today that CBS Radio and AOL Radio will combine their radio networks to offer a single free Internet radio network to launch later this spring.

The new network will be supported by CBS Radio’s advertising sales. The network will include AOL’s 200-plus Internet radio stations and CBS’ 150-plus stations and custom channels.
