XM Hits Half-Million Subscriber Mark

Washington – XM Satellite Radio announced it surpassed the half million mark in total subscribers today.

The company’s service has been available nationally for approximately 15 months.

XM also announced it teamed with Weather Works, an affiliate of Baron Services, Huntsville, Ala., to offer advanced, real-time weather service to the marine, aviation and emergency management markets. The data-only weather service will be available later this summer on a subscription basis at $9.99 per month. Garmin will supply XM products with weather capability to the marine and aviation markets.

In other satellite radio news, XM competitor Sirius Satellite Radio said Hertz will offer Sirius service to its car rental customers in 33 major airport locations, expanding its existing test program.

Beginning this month, Sirius will be available in Hertz rental cars at airports in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston and Detroit, in addition to Denver, Phoenix, Las Vegas and California and Florida.

Additional major markets will be rolled out each month thereafter, culminating in 33 markets by July, Sirius says the program will help expose a wide variety of consumers to its service.
